MACIEK NABRDALIK / VII: "CHERNOBYL'S OUTSKIRTS"

http://www.viiphoto.com/showstory.php?nID=1229

The outskirts of the city of Chernobyl, Ukraine.

They live on the border of the zone, in the same houses they lived in a quarter century ago before the disaster – too far from the reactor
to join the tens of thousands who were designated victims and granted replacement housing and symbolic gestures of disability
compensation. Still, they were too close to avoid the tragedy.(...)

AGNIESZKA RAYSS / SPUTNIK PHOTOS: "EARTH BLEEDS WATER"

http://agnieszkarayss.com/gallery/earth-bleeds-water

Part of the IS(not) project by SPUTNIK PHOTOS.

Agnieszka Rayss, together with the poet Sigurbjorg Prastardottir, have positioned themselves on the shores of Icelandic lakes
and at the edge of modern swimming pools. The authoresses have taken a look at natural water reservoirs, present in the lives of
the islanders since time immemorial, as well as luxury tourism, which made an appearance in Iceland with the advent of new technologies.
Water has proven to be Iceland's gold. Nature was domesticated, then sold.

ILONA SZWARC: "AMERICAN GIRLS"

http://www.ilonaszwarc.com/american-girls

American girls posing with their American Girl dolls.

When Polish-born Ilona Szwarc moved to New York City in 2008, she was captivated by the world of American Girl doll.
“I realized that, the American Girl doll design embodies contemporary cultural values. They were conceived to be anti-Barbie toys
modeled after the body of a 9-year-old. Each doll can be customized to look exactly like its owner, yet all of them really look the same.
I think there is a natural need to relate to and carve out an identity, and these dolls play an important role for girls. Girls in the U.S.
seem to all be raised as future stars and they feel very entitled - these dolls underscore that.
The projec portraits owners who customize the American Girl doll to look like themselves.

ULA WIZNEROWICZ: "BETWEEN HOMES"

Work in progress

“When entering a new place I feel like going into somebody’s life or reading somebody’s diary”.
The idea of my project is to juxtapose ways of living in Polish and English countryside by showing their inhabitants
in their own interiors as well as outdoor surroundings. I try to capture the richness of differences and similarities
of these two places in a bigger detail, focusing on my own, personal vision. The topic came to me after moving
to the UK from a tiny village of Palmowo in central Poland, where I spent most of my life, experiencing the rural
aspects of life, and that is why perhaps I can see things, which others are not able to. On the other hand, however,
I have been living in the UK for the past five years and I feel that I have become a part of the local culture as well,
what in a way obligates me to bring these two realities and people’s mentalities closer to each other by capturing
and showing things, which can make, that we will know more about our two different worlds of the Western
and former Eastern Europe and as a consequence about ourselves as well.

BOWNIK: "GAMERS", "TRAINING HALLS"

http://bownik.eu/portfolio/2/1/index2.htm

The project consists of two parts: Gamers and Training Halls. Large-format portraits reflect a typological approach
to the new image of a sportsman, whose physical representation is not known to his rival due to the electronic form
of competition. In this project, the gamer is revealed to everyone. Yet, this is not about exposing or trying to match
the reality with the mental or virtual images of individuals. This is a sort of analysis of the cyber environment
and people who constitute it.(...)

MACIEJ DAKOWICZ: "CARDIFF"

http://www.maciejdakowicz.com/filter/CardiffAfterDark/photos

St Mary street is one of the main streets of central Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. A city as any other in the UK.
The street is one of the main hubs of clubs and pubs of the city. Sooner or later most party goers end up on that street.
The street is closed for cars on Saturday nights and becomes the main scene of the city night life, fuelled by alcohol
and emotions. Everything takes place in public - from drinking, fighting, kissing to crying and sleeping.(...)

An album published by Thames & Hudson is due out in autmn 2012.

turned into a strange guidebook

Polishness, which takes one
on a trip starting from the rural, somewhat boggy
idyll,
 and then through
the private collections of papal gadgets (collected more for the
 fun of it
than out of sheer respect), all the way to the Foundation of John Paul II

MARIUSZ FORECKI: "I LOVE POLAND"

http://www.forecki.pl/

I have been photographing Poland from the mid-80s. The recorded events and situations are often very personal.
They have no record of high politics or spectacular events. They seem to be of little importance, from a global point of view.
But from the standpoint of the heroes of these photographs, they most fully describe their daily lives. Gathered in one place
they give a view of the changes which we witnessed, or maybe just me ...(...)

from 1957. "The project lasted exactly a year, i.e. 365 days, when I climbed up 365 trees, a different tree
each time. Not only is it my diary, but also my private rebellion, a small protest", writes the artist
in the preface to her album "Cecylia Malik: 365 Trees".

It's nearly 10pm, young men wearing fluorescent green vest hit the road, stopping oncoming stream of cars.
Surprised drivers without any doubts stopping their cars on both sides of the road. Some of them wind covered
in rain drops side windows down, looking on an excitement crowd standing on the roadside. Noise of classic
American engines spreads out hypnotising everyone around. I have forgotten it's not the scene
in American Graffiti, I'm in 2011 on a North Circular road in North London. (September 2011, London,UK)
